Pimesoole is a term used in ecological experimental design to denote a small, semi-isolated compartment within a mesocosm that hosts a defined assemblage of organisms and environmental conditions. The concept sits between microcosm studies and full-scale mesocosm experiments, enabling controlled replication while preserving ecological realism. The name combines pseudo- (to indicate its artificial boundary) and meso- (middle-sized), with -ole as a suffix denoting a localized habitat unit.

Typically, pimesooles are constructed within a larger aquatic or terrestrial mesocosm by partitioning a section of the system with transparent or permeable barriers. They are designed to maintain stable physical conditions (temperature, pH, light) and permit controlled manipulation of variables such as nutrient input or trophic structure. Biological communities within pimesooles are selected to reflect the target ecosystem processes, often including primary producers, grazers, and predators, along with microbial assemblages.

Applications include experiments on nutrient cycling, resilience to disturbance, and trophic interactions, with the advantage of higher experimental control and replicability compared with full systems.
