Pikkiaivoihin is a Finnish term that translates to "cerebellum" in English. The cerebellum is a major structure of the brain, located at the back of the skull, below the cerebral cortex and behind the brainstem. It plays a crucial role in coordinating voluntary movements such as posture, balance, coordination, and speech, resulting in smooth and balanced muscular activity.

Although it constitutes only about 10% of the brain's total volume, it contains more than half of all the neurons in the brain. The cerebellum is not responsible for initiating movement, but rather for refining it. It receives sensory information from the spinal cord and other parts of the brain and then sends out motor impulses that move the body. Damage to the cerebellum can result in problems with motor control, affecting gait, speech, and the ability to perform precise movements. Beyond motor functions, research also suggests the cerebellum is involved in some cognitive functions, including attention and language, as well as emotional regulation.
