Piiskop is the Estonian term for bishop, a clergy member who provides regional church leadership in several Christian traditions. The word derives from the Greek episkopos, “overseer.” In many churches, a piiskop is regarded as a successor to the apostles and holds a share in the episcopal succession, which is exercised through ordination to the episcopal office and the governance of a diocese or similar territorial unit.

A bishop’s typical responsibilities include teaching and safeguarding doctrine, governing clergy and parishes within their diocese, and administering key rites such as ordination of priests and deacons and the confirmation of lay members. Bishops also oversee liturgical practices, pastoral care, and church discipline, and may represent their church in regional or national councils or ecumenical bodies. The specific powers and duties of a piiskop vary among Christian denominations.

Differences among traditions shape how episcopal leadership is organized. In Catholic and Orthodox churches, bishops are part of an uninterrupted apostolic succession and participate in a bishop’s college or synod with a clear hierarchical structure; in the Catholic Church, the bishop of Rome (the Pope) holds a unique primacy. In Anglican and some Lutheran contexts, bishops likewise trace apostolic succession but operate within national church governance, with varying degrees of autonomy and role.

In Estonia, piiskop is used for bishops in churches with episcopal governance, notably the Estonian Evangelical Lutheran Church and the Catholic Church. These bishops oversee dioceses, appoint and ordain clergy, and contribute to the church’s mission and ministry within the country.
