Pigmentcellslinjer, also known as pigment cell lines, are cultured cells derived from pigment-producing tissues, most commonly melanocytes and retinal pigment epithelium. They are used to study pigment synthesis, pigment-related diseases, and cancer biology, and include both non-tumorigenic lines and tumor-derived lines such as melanoma models. Lines may originate from human or animal tissue and can be either immortalized or transformed to enable sustained growth.

In normal pigment cell lines, melanocytes typically display dendritic morphology and produce melanin, whereas melanoma lines are characterized by rapid proliferation and variable pigment production. Common research lines are used to analyze melanogenesis, tyrosinase activity, and the function of transcription factors like MITF, as well as signaling pathways such as cAMP, Wnt, and PI3K/AKT that influence pigment biology and cell survival. Retinal pigment epithelium lines help study ocular metabolism and diseases like age-related macular degeneration.

Pigment cell lines support a range of applications, including basic research on pigment regulation, toxicology and safety testing for cosmetics, drug screening, and translational studies in melanoma. They are valuable for dissecting pigmentary disorders, pigment transport, and the tumorigenic behavior of melanoma cells, as appropriate to the line’s origin.

Due to their in vitro nature, these lines require careful authentication, mycoplasma testing, and awareness of genetic drift from passaging. They are cultured under specialized conditions designed to support pigment cells, and researchers should select lines that best match their biological question.
