Pigeon toe, also known as metatarsus adductus or internal tibial torsion, is a common condition characterized by the inward turning of the feet. In children, it is often present from birth and typically resolves on its own as the child grows. The condition arises from the way the legs and feet are positioned in the womb.

There are a few main types of pigeon toe. Metatarsus adductus involves a bending in the front part of the foot, while internal tibial torsion refers to the twisting of the shinbone inward. Femoral anteversion, where the thighbone turns inward, can also contribute to the appearance of pigeon toes.

In most cases, pigeon toe is a mild and self-correcting condition. Children with pigeon toes can usually walk and run normally, and the appearance often improves significantly by the age of five or six. Physical therapy and stretching exercises may be recommended in some instances, though surgery is rarely necessary. If a child experiences pain, difficulty walking, or if the condition does not improve, a medical professional should be consulted.
