A pidurdamissüsteem, commonly known as a braking system, is a mechanism used to slow down or stop a moving object. In vehicles, these systems are critical for safety, allowing drivers to control their speed and avoid collisions. The most prevalent type of braking system in modern vehicles is the hydraulic brake, which utilizes brake fluid to transmit force from the brake pedal to the braking components.

When the brake pedal is pressed, it actuates a master cylinder, which in turn pressurizes the brake fluid. This pressurized fluid is then forced through brake lines to the wheels. At each wheel, the fluid acts upon either brake calipers (in disc brake systems) or wheel cylinders (in drum brake systems). In disc brakes, the calipers squeeze brake pads against a rotor attached to the wheel, creating friction that slows rotation. In drum brakes, the wheel cylinder pushes brake shoes outward against the inner surface of a rotating drum.

The effectiveness of a braking system depends on several factors, including the condition of the brake pads or shoes, rotors or drums, brake fluid, and the overall integrity of the hydraulic system. Regular maintenance is essential to ensure optimal performance and safety. Advanced braking systems, such as anti-lock braking systems (ABS), further enhance safety by preventing wheel lock-up during heavy braking, allowing the driver to maintain steering control.
