Piacmködést is a Hungarian term that translates to "market malfunctioning" or "market failure" in English. It refers to situations where the free market, left to its own devices, does not allocate resources efficiently or does not produce the socially optimal outcomes. This can manifest in various ways, leading to negative consequences for society.

One common cause of piacmködést is the presence of externalities. These are costs or benefits that affect a third party not directly involved in the transaction. For example, pollution from a factory is a negative externality, as it imposes health costs on the surrounding community that are not borne by the factory owner or the consumers of its products. Conversely, a beekeeper benefiting from nearby apple orchards is a positive externality.

Another significant cause is the existence of public goods. These are goods that are non-excludable (difficult to prevent people from using) and non-rivalrous (one person's consumption doesn't diminish another's). National defense or clean air are examples. Because individuals can benefit from public goods without paying for them, the market tends to under-provide them, as private firms have little incentive to produce them.

Information asymmetry can also lead to piacmködést. When one party in a transaction has more or better information than the other, it can lead to exploitation or inefficient outcomes. For instance, in the used car market, sellers generally know more about a car's condition than buyers, potentially leading to the sale of "lemons."

Finally, market power, such as monopolies or oligopolies, can distort market outcomes by allowing firms to set prices above competitive levels, leading to reduced output and consumer welfare. These instances of piacmködést often necessitate government intervention through regulations, taxes, subsidies, or the direct provision of goods and services to correct market inefficiencies.
