Phosphatederived refers to substances that are derived from phosphate or that contain phosphate groups as a fundamental component. The term encompasses a broad range of materials, including inorganic phosphate minerals and salts, as well as organic compounds in which a phosphate moiety is covalently bonded to carbon or other atoms. In practice, phosphatederived materials are produced from phosphoric acid and phosphate rocks, and then transformed through reactions with metals, silica, or organic substrates to yield stable phosphate-containing products.

Inorganic phosphatederived materials are often formed by reacting phosphoric acid with metals or metal oxides to produce metal phosphates, calcium phosphate compounds, or phosphate glasses. These materials find use in coatings, cements, ceramics, and bioceramics. Organic phosphatederived compounds arise from esterification or related chemistry of phosphoric acid, yielding phosphate esters that serve as flame retardants, plasticizers, lubricants, surfactants, and functional additives. In industry, phosphate esters contribute to flame retardancy and compatibility in polymers and lubricants. Environmental considerations include managing phosphorus runoff to mitigate eutrophication, and the handling of potentially toxic organophosphates in some applications.
