The phi coefficient, often denoted by the Greek letter $\phi$, is a measure of the correlation between two binary variables. It is also known as the coefficient of association, the mean square contingency coefficient, or simply the phi coefficient. It is particularly useful in situations where both variables can only take one of two values, such as yes/no, true/false, or presence/absence.

The calculation of the phi coefficient is based on a 2x2 contingency table. This table displays the frequencies of the four possible combinations of the two variables. For example, if one variable represents whether a person has a certain disease (yes/no) and the other variable represents whether they have a specific symptom (yes/no), the table would show the number of people with the disease and the symptom, with the disease but not the symptom, with the symptom but not the disease, and without either.

The formula for the phi coefficient is derived from these frequencies. Let a, b, c, and d be the frequencies in the contingency table, where a is the number of occurrences of both variables being positive, b is the number of occurrences of the first variable being positive and the second negative, c is the number of occurrences of the first variable being negative and the second positive, and d is the number of occurrences of both variables being negative. The formula is then given by $\phi = \frac{ad - bc}{\sqrt{(a+b)(a+c)(b+d)(c+d)}}$.

The phi coefficient ranges from -1 to +1. A value of +1 indicates a perfect positive correlation, meaning that whenever one variable is positive, the other is also positive, and whenever one is negative, the other is also negative. A value of -1 indicates a perfect negative correlation, where the presence of one variable is always associated with the absence of the other. A value of 0 suggests no linear association between the two variables. The phi coefficient is mathematically equivalent to the Pearson correlation coefficient when applied to two binary variables.
