phanerofyytit

Phanerophytes, known in Finnish as phanerofyytit, are a plant life-form in the Raunkiær system. They are characterized by perennating buds located well above the ground on aerial shoots, typically at least 25 cm from the soil surface. This category includes most trees and many tall shrubs. The buds are usually protected by bark or woody tissue, enabling the plant to survive unfavorable seasons, such as winter cold or drought, by maintaining above-ground structures year after year.

Geographic distribution: Phanerophytes are found in a wide range of climates, from temperate forests to tropical rainforests. In temperate zones they include oaks, maples, pines, and birches; in tropical zones many canopy and emergent trees are phanerophytes.

Ecological role: As the dominant life-form in many forest biomes, phanerophytes contribute to vertical structure, habitat complexity, and primary productivity. Their ability to retain buds aloft allows growth in environments with seasonal frost or drought.

Comparison with other life-forms: Phanerophytes differ from chamaephytes (bud protection at 25 cm or less above ground), hemicryptophytes (buds located at soil surface, or just below), geophytes (perennating buds below ground in bulbs or tubers), and therophytes (annuals that survive as seeds).
