Phacoemulsification is a surgical procedure used to remove a cloudy or damaged lens in the eye, a condition known as cataract. The procedure involves using an ultrasonic instrument to break up the cataractous lens into small pieces, which are then suctioned out of the eye.

The phacoemulsification process begins with making a small incision in the cornea, the clear dome-shaped surface at the front of the eye. A specialized ultrasonic handpiece, called a phaco needle, is then inserted through the incision and into the lens capsule, a clear membrane that surrounds the lens. The phaco needle emits high-frequency ultrasonic waves that break up the lens into small fragments.

As the lens fragments are created, they are simultaneously suctioned out of the eye by the phaco needle. The suction action helps to remove the fragmented lens tissue, while also maintaining a clear path for the phaco needle. The entire process typically takes around 15-30 minutes to complete.

Phacoemulsification is considered a safe and effective procedure for treating cataracts. It offers several advantages over older cataract surgery techniques, including faster healing times, smaller incisions, and reduced risk of complications. Most patients experience significant improvement in vision following the procedure, although some may require glasses or contact lenses to correct any residual vision problems.
