Petefészkeket is the Hungarian term for ovarian follicles. These are small sacs found within the ovaries of female mammals that contain an immature egg cell. The development and maturation of ovarian follicles are crucial for ovulation and reproduction. This process is known as folliculogenesis.

During a woman's reproductive years, a specific number of follicles begin to develop each menstrual cycle. Under hormonal influence, usually follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), one or more follicles will grow larger and more dominant, while others will regress. The dominant follicle(s) will eventually mature and release an egg during ovulation. The remaining follicles that do not mature typically undergo atresia, a process of degeneration.

The number and quality of ovarian follicles decline with age. This decline is a primary factor in a woman's decreasing fertility as she gets older. Medical conditions affecting the ovaries, such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), can also impact the development and maturation of petefészkeket, leading to irregular ovulation or anovulation. Ultrasound is often used to visualize and count ovarian follicles for diagnostic purposes, particularly in fertility assessments.
