Perämoottori is the Finnish word for an outboard motor. An outboard motor is a self-contained propulsion system for boats, consisting of an engine, gearbox, and propeller or jet drive, designed to be affixed to the outside of the transom of a boat. Outboard motors are used for powering small watercraft such as dinghies, canoes, kayaks, and small fishing boats. They are also popular for auxiliary propulsion on larger sailboats.

The design of the outboard motor has remained largely consistent since its invention. It typically comprises an engine, usually a gasoline internal combustion engine, mounted above a drive shaft. This drive shaft extends down into the water, connecting to a gearbox which then drives a propeller. The entire unit can be swiveled and tilted, allowing for steering and trimming the boat. Modern outboard motors are available in a wide range of power outputs, from a few horsepower for small tenders to hundreds of horsepower for larger vessels.

Outboard motors offer several advantages, including portability, ease of installation and removal, and relatively simple maintenance. They provide excellent maneuverability and can be easily raised out of the water when not in use, reducing drag and preventing damage. The development of electric outboard motors has also introduced a quieter and more environmentally friendly alternative for smaller boats.
