Perämoottorien, also known as outboard motors, are self-contained propulsion systems for boats. They consist of an engine, gearbox, and propeller all integrated into a single unit that attaches to the stern of a vessel. These motors are widely used on small to medium-sized boats due to their versatility, portability, and ease of installation.

The primary components of a perämoottori include the powerhead, which houses the engine and fuel system; the drive shaft, connecting the powerhead to the lower unit; and the lower unit, which contains the gearbox and propeller. Engines can be either two-stroke or four-stroke, with four-stroke engines generally offering better fuel efficiency and lower emissions, while two-stroke engines are typically lighter and simpler.

Perämoottorien are controlled by a tiller handle or a remote steering system. Throttle control is also integrated into the tiller or the remote console. Tilting the motor up, known as trimming, allows the boat to be maneuvered in shallow water or for transport. They come in a wide range of power outputs, from small engines suitable for dinghies to large, high-horsepower units for offshore fishing boats. Their popularity stems from their ability to provide both propulsion and steering, simplifying boat design and operation.
