Perusöljyllä refers to a base oil, which is a component used in the formulation of lubricants. These base oils are the foundation upon which lubricants are built, and they determine many of the lubricant's properties. Synthetic base oils generally offer superior performance characteristics compared to mineral oils, such as better thermal stability, lower volatility, and improved low-temperature properties.

The choice of base oil is critical for lubricant performance, influencing factors like viscosity, oxidation resistance, wear protection, and additive solvency. Lubricant manufacturers select base oils based on the intended application and the required performance specifications. For example, high-temperature applications often necessitate synthetic base oils with excellent thermal stability.
