Perussäädintyyppejä, or basic control types, refers to fundamental classifications of control systems used in engineering and automation. These systems aim to maintain a desired output variable at a specific setpoint by manipulating an input variable. The primary distinction lies in how the control action is generated based on the system's error, which is the difference between the desired setpoint and the actual measured output.

The most common types include proportional (P), integral (I), and derivative (D) control. Proportional control adjusts the control output in direct proportion to the current error. A larger error results in a larger control action. While simple and effective for many applications, proportional control alone can lead to a steady-state error, meaning the output may not perfectly reach the setpoint.

Integral control addresses this steady-state error by accumulating the error over time. If an error persists, the integral term increases, eventually driving the output to the setpoint. However, integral control can introduce oscillations and slow down the system's response.

Derivative control anticipates future errors by considering the rate of change of the error. If the error is changing rapidly, derivative control applies a counteracting force to dampen oscillations and improve stability. It is rarely used alone but is often combined with P or PI control.

Combining these three actions leads to PID control, a widely used algorithm in industrial automation due to its versatility and ability to achieve precise and stable control. The tuning of these parameters (Kp, Ki, Kd) allows for customization to suit the specific dynamics of the system being controlled. Other basic control types exist, such as on-off control, which is a simpler form of control with only two states, fully on or fully off.
