Perusmekanismi, literally meaning the basic mechanism, is a term used in Finnish scholarship to refer to the fundamental causal process that explains how a phenomenon occurs. In English-language usage, the concept is often described as a basic mechanism or mechanistic explanation. The idea centers on understanding not only that an association exists but how, step by step, factors causally interact to produce an outcome.

A basic mechanism typically comprises a sequence of components or stages that link inputs to outputs. It is expected to be generalizable beyond a single instance, yield testable predictions, and be amenable to empirical validation. Mechanistic explanations aim to specify the causal chain and intermediate processes rather than relying solely on description or correlation.
