Perturbing refers to introducing a small disturbance to a system or to the state of a model. A perturbation is a deviation from a reference condition, such as a slight change in parameters, external forces, or initial values. The study of perturbations investigates how such small changes affect outcomes, stability, or behavior.

In mathematics and physics, perturbation theory analyzes systems where an exact solution exists for the unperturbed case and seeks approximate solutions when a small perturbation is present. Methods include regular perturbation (expansions in a small parameter) and singular perturbation (where the perturbation changes the system's dominant scales). Applications span quantum mechanics, optics, fluid dynamics, and material science.

In celestial mechanics, perturbations arise from gravitational influences of other bodies, non-spherical mass distributions, or relativistic effects. These perturbations explain deviations from ideal orbital motion, and are described by evolving orbital elements with time.

In dynamical systems and control, perturbations test robustness and guide design of stable systems. Noise, disturbances, and model errors are modeled as perturbations to assess sensitivity and to create feedback that mitigates unwanted deviations.

Common tools include perturbation theory, asymptotic expansions, multiple-scale analysis, and numerical simulations comparing perturbed and unperturbed cases. Examples include atmospheric drag on a satellite, a weak external field shifting atomic energy levels, or friction altering an oscillator’s amplitude.
