Perspektiv is the Swedish term for perspective and is used to describe both a point of view and the technical methods used to render three-dimensional space on a two-dimensional surface. In everyday language, it refers to how observers relate to objects or events, while in the arts it refers to the systems that create depth and spatial order in images.

Etymology: Perspektiv derives from Latin perspectivus, via French perspective and Italian prospettiva. In Swedish, as in many languages, the word has broadened to denote multiple related senses, including vantage point, aspect, and approach to problem solving. In English, the cognate word perspective carries similar meanings.

Art and visual representation: The most influential use is in drawing and painting. Linear (or mathematical) perspective uses a horizon line, a vanishing point, and converging lines to simulate depth. This approach emerged in Renaissance Italy and was developed by figures such as Brunelleschi and Alberti. Atmospheric perspective describes depth through color and detail, with distant forms appearing cooler, lighter, and less distinct.

Philosophy and social sciences: Perspective also denotes a particular standpoint or framework for interpreting phenomena. Perspective-taking, the cognitive ability to adopt another's point of view, is important for social understanding and empathy. The idea that knowledge is shaped by position or context is central to some theories of science and culture, including standpoint theory and hermeneutics.

Other uses and implications: In media, design, and communication, perspective directs viewer attention and influences interpretation. In film and photography, camera angle and point of view establish narrative stance. In architecture and urban planning, perspective drawing helps convey scale and spatial relationships to viewers and clients.
