Perkolaty are liquids produced by percolation, a liquid–solid extraction method used to obtain soluble constituents from solid materials. The term perkolaty generally refers to the extract that emerges after the solvent passes through the material; perkolat is the singular form. The technique is used in pharmacognosy, herbal medicine and chemistry to obtain plant-based extracts.

Process: Dried plant material is ground and packed into a column. A solvent such as ethanol, water or a hydroalcoholic mix percolates through the material, typically by gravity or gentle pumping. The liquid that exits is collected as the perkolat. Flow rate, solvent choice and temperature influence extraction efficiency.

Applications: Perkolates are used to make tinctures, herbal extracts and some pharmaceutical preparations. They reflect the solvent and plant used; components like alkaloids or flavonoids may be enriched or depleted depending on conditions. Perkolates are favored when gentle extraction is preferred to avoid heat damage.

Comparison and limitations: Percolation contrasts with maceration and Soxhlet extraction. It can be efficient and operate at ambient temperature but may require more materials and solvent, and standardization is important to ensure consistent composition.

History and terminology: The term derives from Latin percolare, meaning to steep through. Percolation methods have a long history in pharmacopeias and herbal practice and remain in use for tinctures and certain extracts.
