Perennális is a term derived from Latin, meaning lasting or continuing through the year. It is most commonly used in botany to describe plants that live for more than two years. These plants typically survive through a dormant period and then resume growth and flowering in subsequent years. Perennial plants include a wide variety of species, from herbaceous plants that die back to the ground each winter and regrow from their roots in spring, to woody plants like trees and shrubs that retain their above-ground structures.

The life cycle of a perennial plant is distinct from annuals, which complete their life cycle in a single growing season and die, and biennials, which live for two years, flowering and setting seed in their second year before dying. Perennials often establish a more robust root system over time, which can make them more resilient to environmental changes and less demanding in terms of annual replanting compared to annuals.
