Perceptionsituation is a concept in perceptual and social cognitive literature that refers to the process by which an observer constructs an understanding of a surrounding event or environment at a given moment. It emphasizes that what is perceived as the situation is not a passive readout of stimuli but a mental construction shaped by sensory input, prior knowledge, expectations, goals, and social context.

The term draws on constructivist theories of perception and the study of situation awareness. It describes how perception is generated through interactions between bottom-up sensory signals and top-down cognitive processes, with frame of reference, cultural norms, and task demands guiding interpretation. Ambiguity in stimuli is resolved by expectations and goals, which can lead to different observers arriving at different characterizations of the same event.

Mechanisms include selective attention, cue interpretation, and rapid attribution processes.
