Pellavaöljyyn, known in English as linseed oil, is a drying oil derived from the seeds of the flax plant (Linum usitatissimum). It is produced by pressing the mature seeds of the flax plant. The oil is valued for its ability to polymerize and harden when exposed to air, forming a durable film.

Historically, pellavaöljyyn has seen widespread use as a binder in oil paints and varnishes due to its drying properties. It was a fundamental component in traditional oil painting techniques, allowing artists to create rich, glossy finishes and blend colors effectively. In woodworking, it has been employed as a finish to protect and enhance the natural grain of wood, often penetrating the surface to provide a degree of water resistance.

Refined pellavaöljyyn, also known as boiled linseed oil, has been treated with metallic salts or other driers to accelerate its drying time. Cold-pressed pellavaöljyyn, on the other hand, is obtained without heat and retains more of the natural components of the flaxseed, but dries more slowly.

While its use in some industrial applications has been supplanted by synthetic alternatives, pellavaöljyyn remains a popular choice for artists and woodworkers seeking natural and traditional finishes. It is also a source of omega-3 fatty acids when consumed as a dietary supplement, though food-grade pellavaöljyyn must be handled and stored carefully due to its susceptibility to rancidity.
