Pelkistimiin is a Finnish grammatical form, meaning “into a fright” or “into being frightened.” It derives from the verb “pelkistä,” which means “to frighten” or “to scare,” combined with the nominalizing suffix “‐im” and the adessive or illative case ending “‐iin.” The word is rarely used in everyday speech, and its modern equivalents are “pelkustajaksi” (to become a fright) or the adjective “pelottava” (frightening). Historically, it appeared in early nineteenth‑century Finnish literature and dialectal speech, with the form “pelkistimiin” designating the experience of being terrified or the act of causing terror.

In literary contexts, “pelkistimiin” appears in sentences such as “Käppiä pelkistimiin kun aurinko loisti,” meaning “The hedgehog went into a fright when the sun shone.” This usage evokes an emotional state rather than a physical one, implying a sudden and intense fear. The form can also be used figuratively to describe a situation that induces dread, e.g., “Kansalle meni pelkistimiin viimeisen koiton jälkeen.” In such cases, the phrase is understood as “the people were terrified after the last encounter.”

Because “pelkistimiin” is a specific inflection with limited contemporary usage, it is mainly studied by linguists and historians.
