Individual cells typically range from 20 to 60 micrometers and appear spherical to ellipsoidal, often with visible surface markings such as pores or ridges.

Taxonomy and evolution within pelillisets remain debated. In older classifications they are treated as protists, but recent analyses emphasize their unique plate-based pellicle, setting them apart from many known protozoa and algae. They do not form true tissues, though some species can aggregate into loose, colonial-like clusters under certain conditions.

Habitat and ecology: Pelillisets inhabit quiet freshwater and nearshore marine environments, especially in the photic zone where they feed on bacteria and small algae. Feeding is primarily phagocytic. Reproduction is mainly asexual, through binary fission or budding, and several life-cycle variants include dormant cyst-like stages that help them survive desiccation or nutrient fluctuations.

Fossil record and discovery: Fossil impressions of pelillisets are found in microfossil assemblages within silica- and carbonate-rich sediments, with occurrences spanning from late Precambrian to the Paleozoic in multiple regions. Preservation relies on detailed relief of the pellicle and the plate architecture, enabling researchers to distinguish pelillisets from other microfossils.

Significance: Pelillisets contribute to discussions of early eukaryotic diversification and the evolution of cell coverings. Their plate-based pellicle offers a model for how simple outer membranes can enhance stability and interactions with the environment, informing comparative studies of modern pellicle-bearing organisms and related lineages.
