Pelagiaalsete refers to organisms and environments found in the pelagic zone of the ocean. The pelagic zone is the open ocean, comprising the water column far from shore and the seabed. This vast area is broadly divided into distinct zones based on depth and light penetration, each supporting unique life forms.

The upper layers, the epipelagic (sunlight) and mesopelagic (twilight) zones, receive some sunlight and are rich in phytoplankton, the base of most oceanic food webs. Organisms here include zooplankton, jellyfish, small fish, and larger predators like tuna and sharks. As depth increases, light diminishes, and the bathyal (midnight) and abyssal (abyssal) zones are characterized by darkness, high pressure, and cold temperatures. Life in these deeper regions, often referred to as pelagiaalsete organisms, has adapted to these extreme conditions. Many are bioluminescent, feeding on marine snow (detritus falling from upper layers) or on other deep-sea creatures. Examples include anglerfish, viperfish, and various types of squid and crustaceans.
