Pedológia is the scientific study of soils, focusing on their formation, composition, physical properties, classification, and distribution. It is a branch of soil science and is closely related to geology, biology, and chemistry. Pedologists examine the various horizons within a soil profile, understanding how parent material, climate, organisms, topography, and time interact to create distinct soil types.

The study of soil formation, known as pedogenesis, is central to pedológia. This involves understanding processes such as weathering of rocks, the accumulation of organic matter, the movement of minerals within the soil (eluviation and illuviation), and the development of soil structure. Pedologists use a variety of methods to analyze soil, including field observations, laboratory tests for chemical and physical properties, and remote sensing techniques.

Understanding soil is crucial for numerous applications, including agriculture, forestry, environmental management, and construction. Pedológia helps in assessing soil fertility, predicting soil behavior under different land uses, and identifying potential environmental hazards such as erosion or contamination. Soil classification systems, such as the World Reference Base for Soil Resources (WRB) or the USDA soil taxonomy, are developed through pedological research to provide a standardized way of describing and comparing soils globally.
