Payment integration is the process of incorporating payment functionality into software, websites, or mobile apps to enable electronic transactions. It allows merchants to accept payment methods such as credit and debit cards, digital wallets, bank transfers, and other instruments within their own user interface, delivering a seamless checkout experience.

Key components include the payment gateway, which securely transmits payment data; the payment processor, which handles the authorization with the card networks; the merchant acquirer, which settles funds to the merchant's account; and the merchant account, if required. Tokenization, encryption, and fraud-prevention tools are commonly employed to protect data and reduce PCI scope.

Integration approaches vary. API-based integrations connect directly to a processor to present a custom checkout flow and handle real-time responses. Hosted payment pages or hosted fields redirect or embed a payment page hosted by the provider, reducing PCI scope. Client-side components and SDKs allow prebuilt UI for card entry while keeping sensitive data off the merchant server.

Security and compliance are central, with PCI DSS requirements, data tokenization, 3D Secure, and ongoing risk monitoring. Merchants must consider regional availability, supported currencies, settlement times, refunds, chargebacks, and webhook/notification handling.

Common use cases include e-commerce storefronts, subscription billing, mobile apps, and on-demand services. While providers differ in features and pricing, most payment integrations offer a combination of APIs, dashboards, and prebuilt UI to balance control and ease of use.
