The term derives from Latin patrimonium and encompasses assets, liabilities, and claims that can be valued in money.

In civil law systems, a person’s patrimony is treated as a single economic unit that persists regardless of changes in status or personal circumstances. It includes movable and immovable property, financial assets, and certain rights such as receivables, as well as debts owed to the person. The patrimony acts as the basis for liability and for balancing rights in civil procedures, inheritance, and contract enforcement.

Patrimoniale also appears in family law, referring to the regime patrimoniale or matrimonial property regime. This set of rules governs how assets are owned and managed within a marriage or civil partnership.
