Partial pressure, often abbreviated as p, is a term used in chemistry and physics to describe the pressure exerted by a single component of a mixture of gases. Imagine a container filled with several different gases. Each gas molecule within that container is in constant random motion, colliding with the walls of the container and with each other. These collisions are what create pressure.

The partial pressure of a specific gas in the mixture is the pressure that gas would exert if it were the only gas present in the same volume at the same temperature. This concept is fundamental to understanding gas behavior and is described by Dalton's Law of Partial Pressures. This law states that the total pressure of a gaseous mixture is equal to the sum of the partial pressures of each individual gas in the mixture. In chemical reactions involving gases, the partial pressure of each reactant influences the reaction rate.
