Partikkens is the Danish term related to particles, and partikkens in possessive form is used in phrases such as partikkens egenskaber (the particle's properties). In physics, a particle is a localized object with defined properties, and the study of particles and their interactions is called particle physics. The field seeks to understand the fundamental constituents of matter and energy.

Particles are categorized as elementary or composite. Elementary particles include six quarks, six leptons, and gauge particles such as the photon, gluon, and the W and Z bosons, along with the Higgs boson. Composite particles include hadrons (such as protons and neutrons), atoms, and nuclei, which arise from interactions among elementary particles.

Key properties of particles include mass, electric charge, and spin. Interactions among particles are mediated by four fundamental forces: electromagnetic, strong, weak, and gravity. In the Standard Model of particle physics, the electromagnetic, weak, and strong forces are described by gauge theories, while gravity remains outside the model.

Historically, ideas about indivisible units evolved from ancient philosophy to modern atomic theory. The 20th century brought quantum mechanics and experimental breakthroughs with particle accelerators and detectors. The Large Hadron Collider, for example, confirmed the Higgs boson in 2012, providing crucial support for the Standard Model. Practical applications include medical imaging, radiation therapy, and materials research.

Open questions remain, including the nature of dark matter, the origin of neutrino masses, the matter–antimatter asymmetry, and the pursuit of a quantum theory of gravity. Particle physics continues to refine our understanding of the universe at the smallest scales and its connections to cosmology and technology.
