Parthenogenesis is a form of asexual reproduction where an egg cell develops into an embryo without fertilization by sperm. There are different types of parthenogenesis. Obligate parthenogenesis means that a species reproduces exclusively through this method. Facultative parthenogenesis, on the other hand, occurs in species that can reproduce both sexually and asexually, switching between modes depending on environmental conditions or population dynamics. Some species exhibit pseudogamy, where mating and sperm penetration are necessary to trigger egg development, but the sperm's genetic material is not incorporated into the embryo.

The evolutionary advantage of parthenogenesis can include rapid population growth, especially in favorable conditions, and the ability to reproduce when mates are scarce. However, it can also lead to a lack of genetic diversity, making populations more vulnerable to environmental changes or diseases. While common in invertebrates, parthenogenesis is rare in mammals, with only a few documented instances in certain species under specific laboratory conditions.
