Parotidirauhanen, also known as the parotid gland, is a major salivary gland located in the cheek region of the head. It is one of the three pairs of major salivary glands, the others being the submandibular glands and the sublingual glands. The parotid gland is responsible for producing saliva, which aids in digestion and helps maintain oral hygiene by washing away food particles and bacteria.

The parotid gland is situated in the parotid region, which is bounded by the masseter muscle anteriorly, the sternocleidomastoid muscle posteriorly, and the buccinator muscle inferiorly. It is innervated by the glossopharyngeal nerve (cranial nerve IX) and the auriculotemporal nerve, which is a branch of the mandibular nerve (cranial nerve V3).

Parotid gland dysfunction can lead to various conditions, including parotitis, which is the inflammation of the parotid gland, and Sjögren's syndrome, an autoimmune disorder characterized by dry mouth and dry eyes. Parotid gland tumors, although rare, can also occur and may require surgical intervention.

Parotidectomy, the surgical removal of the parotid gland, is sometimes performed to treat tumors or other abnormalities. Post-operative care is crucial to ensure proper healing and to manage any potential complications, such as dry mouth or facial nerve paralysis.
