Paritetssjekker, often translated as parity checks, are a fundamental concept in error detection within digital communication and data storage. They are a simple yet effective method for verifying the integrity of data. The core principle involves adding an extra bit, known as the parity bit, to a block of data. This parity bit is set in a way that makes the total number of '1' bits in the entire block either even or odd, depending on the type of parity used.

There are two main types of parity checks: even parity and odd parity. With even parity, the parity bit is set to '0' if the number of '1's in the data is already even, and to '1' if the number of '1's is odd. This ensures that the total count of '1's, including the parity bit, is always even. Conversely, odd parity aims to make the total number of '1' bits odd.

When data is transmitted or stored, the parity bit is sent along with the data. At the receiving end or when data is read, the parity is recalculated. If the recalculated parity matches the received parity bit, it is assumed that no errors have occurred. If there is a mismatch, it indicates that an error has likely happened during transmission or storage. Parity checks are particularly useful for detecting single-bit errors. However, they cannot detect all types of errors, such as those where an even number of bits are flipped. Despite this limitation, parity checks remain a valuable and widely used technique due to their simplicity and low computational overhead.
