Paracresols, also known as p-cresol or 4-methylphenol, are organic compounds belonging to the phenol family. They are a type of cresol, which are methylphenols. Paracresol is a colorless solid with a distinctive odor, often described as tar-like or phenolic. It is one of the three structural isomers of cresol, the others being o-cresol (ortho-cresol) and m-cresol (meta-cresol). Paracresol is naturally found in coal tar, human feces, and as a metabolic byproduct in some organisms.

Industrially, paracresol is produced through various methods, including the fractional distillation of coal tar and the alkylation of phenol. Its applications are diverse. It serves as an intermediate in the synthesis of various chemicals, including antioxidants, disinfectants, perfumes, and dyes. For instance, it is used in the production of the antioxidant BHT (butylated hydroxytoluene). Paracresol can also be employed as a solvent and a component in certain resins. Due to its phenolic nature, it exhibits some antiseptic properties, though it is less commonly used as a direct disinfectant compared to other phenolic compounds. Exposure to paracresol can cause irritation to the skin, eyes, and respiratory tract.
