Pappírsframleiðsla, or paper production, is the industrial process of creating paper. This process begins with raw materials, primarily wood pulp, though recycled paper and other plant fibers can also be used. The wood is first debarked and then chipped into smaller pieces. These chips are then cooked with chemicals to separate the cellulose fibers, forming a slurry called pulp.

The pulp is then cleaned and bleached to achieve the desired brightness. For colored paper, dyes are added at this stage. The pulp is then diluted with water and spread onto a large, moving screen, often called a Fourdrinier wire. As the water drains through the screen, the fibers interlock, forming a matted sheet.

This wet sheet then passes through a series of rollers that press out more water and compact the fibers. Finally, the paper moves through heated rollers that dry it completely. Additional processes such as calendering (smoothing with rollers) can be applied to achieve specific surface textures and gloss. The finished paper is then wound into large rolls for further processing or direct sale. The entire process is highly automated and requires significant energy and water resources. Environmental considerations, such as sustainable forestry and wastewater treatment, are important aspects of modern paper production.
