Pantplikt, or deposit obligation, is a policy instrument that requires beverage container producers and importers to ensure a take-back and recycling system for their containers. Consumers pay a refundable deposit when buying a beverage in a qualifying container, and receive the deposit back when returning the container to a designated redemption point, such as a store or recycling facility. The aim is to promote recycling, reduce litter, and shift end-of-life costs from municipalities to producers.

Pantplikt typically covers most bottles and cans intended for beverages, including glass, plastic, and metal containers within a defined size range. Some packaging types or products may be exempt or subject to separate rules. Redemption points are widespread, and many systems use automated reverse vending machines.

The system forms part of a broader extended producer responsibility regime for packaging. In many countries, including Sweden, the program is legislated and administered by a public authority or a designated industry body, often with a central operator coordinating collection, accounting, and recycling accountability.

Pantplikt has contributed to higher recycling rates and better material recovery, but it also imposes costs on producers and retailers and can entail consumer inconvenience. Critics may point to administrative complexity or loopholes, while supporters highlight environmental gains and litter reduction.
