Pan-Germanic is a term used to describe ideas or movements that seek unity among Germanic-speaking peoples or across the Germanic language family. The word combines pan- (all) with Germanic, referring to groups descended from Proto-Germanic. In historical and linguistic contexts it has been used to discuss shared linguistic heritage across West Germanic and North Germanic branches, and to frame discussions of a perceived common cultural-ground among these groups. However, it is not a precise technical term in modern linguistics and is more commonly encountered as a historical descriptor.

In political history, pan-Germanic or pan-Germanism denotes movements or ideologies advocating political unification or greater cultural-political affinity of German-speaking populations and, in some formulations, broader Germanic peoples beyond state borders. This idea was prominent in 19th- and early 20th-century Europe, associated with nationalist campaigns and the growth of pan-German movements. Variants of the concept could include calls for closer ties among German-speaking parts of the Holy Roman Empire, Austria, Germany, the Netherlands, and Scandinavia, though the aims and methods ranged from cultural diplomacy to more expansive political aspirations. The term has since become largely historical and is discussed mainly by scholars of nationalism, ethnolinguistic identity, and political history.
