A service provider, or palveluntarjoaja, is an organization that delivers a defined set of services to customers under a contract. Services can be tangible or digital and may be provided on premises, remotely, or via third-party platforms. Common examples include telecommunications operators, cloud and IT service providers, utility companies, financial service providers, and professional services firms.

Service delivery is typically governed by a service agreement or service-level agreement (SLA) that specifies performance targets, availability, support levels, response times, pricing, and termination terms. Providers may operate under different delivery models, including outsourced, managed, or multi-sourced arrangements, and may offer units such as a service catalog, incident management, and disaster recovery.

Key responsibilities of a service provider include ensuring reliable operation of the service, safeguarding data security and privacy, and complying with applicable laws and industry standards. Providers may be licensed or regulated in certain sectors (for example financial services or healthcare) and commonly pursue certifications such as ISO 9001 (quality management) or ISO 27001 (information security).

Service providers differ from product vendors in that they primarily supply capabilities or performances rather than goods; a managed service provider or cloud provider may assume ongoing responsibility for service performance and customer support.

In EU and Finnish contexts, service providers must respect consumer rights and data protection rules (GDPR), cybersecurity requirements, and sector-specific regulations. Effective governance includes risk management, business continuity planning, incident response, and clear customer communication.
