The term palettestyle is a portmanteau of "palette" and "style," and can be used interchangeably with palette-driven design. It gained prominence with widespread use of digital color tools and brand style guides in the 2010s and 2020s, particularly in graphic design, UI/UX, interior design, and fashion.

Core characteristics include a fixed or limited color palette, consistent application across media, careful attention to color theory (complementary, analogous, triadic relationships), and deliberate treatment of saturations, tints, and shades. It often pairs with restrained typography and simple geometric layouts to maximize color impact.

Variations include monochrome or near-monochrome palettes, analogous palettes for harmony, or high-contrast palettes for bold branding. Designers may create scalable palettes with swatch libraries and ensure accessibility by maintaining sufficient contrast and considering color vision deficiencies.

Applications span branding and identity systems, packaging, websites and apps, product design, and fashion lines that rely on a cohesive color story. Critics note that rigid adherence to a palette can constrain creativity or hamper accessibility if not managed carefully.
