Paleochannels are ancient river or fluvial channels that are no longer active at the surface but are preserved in the geological record as buried or relict features. They occur within upland landscapes, basins, and sedimentary sequences and can be revealed by erosion, drilling, or geophysical surveys.

Formation and preservation: They form when a river incises its valley during base-level fall, aridity, or uplift. After abandonment or lateral shift, the channel is filled with younger sediments or remains buried by later deposits. Over time, relief or a geophysical contrast can preserve the channel signature even when it is not visible at the surface.

Identification and interpretation: Paleochannels are inferred from planform and facies analyses showing channel sands with overbank deposits, cross-bedding, and transitions in grain size. Buried channels are detected with geophysical methods such as seismic reflection, electrical resistivity, and ground-penetrating radar, as well as borehole logs. Dating methods include radiocarbon, luminescence dating, and paleomagnetic correlations.

Significance: They are important for groundwater resources because buried sands can host aquifers; in hydrocarbon geology, channel sands can form reservoir facies. They also yield records of past climates, river dynamics, and landscape evolution and can guide archaeological investigations in some regions.
