Palash, also known scientifically as Butea monosperma, is a species of flowering plant in the family Fabaceae. It is native to tropical and subtropical parts of the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia. The tree is most recognizable for its vibrant orange-red flowers, which bloom profusely in late winter and early spring, often before the new leaves appear. This striking display has earned it names such as "Flame of the Forest" in Hindi.

The Palash tree is medium-sized, typically growing up to 15 meters in height. It has trifoliate leaves, meaning each leaf is composed of three leaflets. The flowers are large, about 2.5 cm long, and grow in clusters. They are followed by pods containing seeds.

Beyond its ornamental value, Palash has a long history of use in traditional medicine across various cultures. Its bark, leaves, flowers, and seeds are believed to possess therapeutic properties and are used in Ayurvedic and other folk medicine systems for ailments ranging from skin conditions to digestive issues. The tree also yields a gum, known as Bengal kino, which has applications in tanning and dyeing. Furthermore, the large leaves are traditionally used as disposable plates and cups. The bright color of the flowers is also utilized in the celebration of Holi, the Hindu festival of colors, where the petals are used to create natural dyes.
