pairoften

Pairoften is a coined term used in data analysis and statistics to describe the frequency with which pairs of items co-occur within a given dataset. It serves as a simple metric of association between two elements, capturing how often they appear together relative to the dataset as a whole.

Formally, in a collection of transactions or observations, pairoften for a pair of items (a, b) can be defined as the co-occurrence count—how many transactions contain both a and b—optionally normalized by the total number of transactions. A common normalization is pairoften(a, b) = cooccurrence(a, b) / N, where N is the number of transactions. In text data or sequential data, pairoften can also be estimated using a sliding window to count co-occurrences within a context window, yielding a joint probability or frequency estimate. The measure is typically symmetric, so pairoften(a, b) equals pairoften(b, a).

Applications of pairoften span multiple domains, including market basket analysis, where it helps identify items that frequently appear together; text mining, for detecting common word pairs; and bioinformatics, where co-occurring biological features may indicate functional associations. It also underpins more advanced measures of association, such as pointwise mutual information or confidence in association rules, as a basic building block.
