Painesäänät, often translated as pressure sound or sound pressure, refers to the variations in air pressure that propagate as waves and are perceived by the human ear as sound. These pressure fluctuations originate from a vibrating source, such as a musical instrument, a voice, or a mechanical device. When an object vibrates, it disturbs the surrounding air molecules, causing them to compress and expand. These compressions and expansions travel outwards as longitudinal waves, meaning the particles of the medium vibrate parallel to the direction of wave propagation.

The intensity of these pressure variations is what we perceive as loudness or sound level, typically measured in decibels (dB). A higher amplitude in the pressure wave corresponds to a louder sound. The frequency of these pressure oscillations, or how rapidly the air pressure changes, determines the pitch of the sound, measured in Hertz (Hz). Humans can typically hear sounds within a frequency range of approximately 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz.
