Paineilmajarru, known in English as air brake, is a type of friction brake system that uses compressed air to operate. It is commonly found on heavy vehicles such as trucks, buses, trains, and trams. The system consists of several key components, including an air compressor, air tanks, brake valves, brake chambers, and brake shoes or pads.

The air compressor, driven by the vehicle's engine, generates compressed air and stores it in reservoirs. When the driver applies the brakes, the brake pedal or lever activates a brake valve. This valve releases compressed air from the reservoirs into brake chambers located at each wheel. The compressed air pushes a diaphragm or piston within the brake chamber, which in turn actuates a mechanical linkage. This linkage forces the brake shoes against the brake drum or the brake pads against the brake disc, creating friction and slowing down or stopping the vehicle.

Air brake systems are favored for heavy vehicles due to their reliability, powerful braking force, and the ability to activate all brakes simultaneously. They are also less susceptible to fade compared to hydraulic systems under heavy use. Maintenance of air brake systems is crucial, as leaks in the compressed air lines can significantly impair braking performance. Regular checks of air pressure, valve operation, and the condition of brake components are essential for safe operation.
