Paddlewheels are a type of water propulsion system used for boats and ships. They consist of a wheel, typically made of wood or metal, with flat boards or paddles attached to its circumference. As the wheel rotates, these paddles dip into the water and push against it, generating forward thrust.

Historically, paddlewheels were one of the earliest and most common methods for steam-powered vessels to move. They were particularly prevalent during the 19th century. The rotation of the paddlewheel is usually powered by an engine, originally a steam engine, but modern applications can utilize other power sources.

There are two main types of paddlewheel arrangements: side-paddle wheels and stern-paddle wheels. Side-paddle wheels are mounted on either side of the vessel, while stern-paddle wheels are located at the rear. The choice of arrangement can affect maneuverability and the vessel's beam.

Paddlewheel propulsion is generally less efficient than modern propeller-based systems, especially at higher speeds. However, they offer good maneuverability at low speeds and can operate effectively in shallow waters where propellers might be damaged. This makes them suitable for certain applications, such as riverboats, ferries, and some specialized tugboats.
