pHindikaatorina refers to the use of a pH indicator. A pH indicator is a substance that changes color at a specific pH value or range, making it useful for determining the acidity or alkalinity of a solution. These indicators are typically weak acids or bases whose molecules exist in two forms, one colored and one colorless, or two different colored forms. The equilibrium between these forms shifts depending on the concentration of hydrogen ions (H+) in the solution, which is directly related to the pH.

Common examples of pH indicators include litmus paper, phenolphthalein, and methyl orange. Litmus paper, perhaps the most well-known, turns red in acidic solutions and blue in alkaline solutions. Phenolphthalein is colorless in acidic and neutral solutions but turns pink in alkaline solutions above a pH of about 8.2. Methyl orange changes from red in acidic solutions to yellow in alkaline solutions, with a transition range around pH 3.1 to 4.4.

The choice of indicator depends on the expected pH range of the solution being tested. Some indicators have a narrow transition range, meaning they change color over a very small pH interval, making them suitable for precise measurements. Others have broader ranges, useful for general estimations. pH indicators are widely used in chemistry laboratories for titrations, qualitative analysis, and for general testing of unknown solutions. They are also found in everyday applications such as swimming pool testing kits and some food products.
