Oxygenfuel refers to a category of combustion processes that utilize pure oxygen as the oxidizer, in contrast to typical air-fuel combustion which relies on oxygen present in the atmosphere. This enrichment with pure oxygen leads to significantly higher combustion temperatures and efficiencies.

The primary advantage of oxygenfuel combustion is the increased flame temperature it achieves. This is due to the absence of nitrogen, a major component of air, which acts as a diluent and absorbs heat during combustion, lowering the overall temperature. By eliminating nitrogen, more of the combustion energy is available to raise the temperature of the products. This high temperature can be beneficial in applications requiring intense heat, such as industrial furnaces, welding, and cutting.

Another key benefit is the reduction in exhaust volume. Since nitrogen is absent, the volume of flue gases produced is considerably less than in air-fuel combustion. This can lead to smaller equipment sizes and lower costs for exhaust gas treatment and handling. Furthermore, the composition of the exhaust gases is altered, typically containing primarily carbon dioxide and water vapor, which can be easier to capture and recycle.

However, the use of pure oxygen also presents challenges. The cost of producing and handling pure oxygen is higher than that of air. Additionally, the extreme temperatures generated can require specialized materials and designs for equipment to withstand the conditions. Safety considerations are also paramount, as the increased oxygen concentration can make materials more flammable and increase the risk of fires. Despite these challenges, oxygenfuel combustion is employed in various specialized industrial processes where its advantages outweigh the drawbacks.
