Overlap calculation refers to determining the extent to which two or more entities share common elements or regions. It is used across disciplines to quantify similarity, redundancy, or dependency by measuring the size or degree of their intersection relative to one or both entities.

The concept can be applied to various representations. For finite sets, overlap is the size of the intersection, often normalized by a related measure such as the union or the smaller set. For intervals on the real line, overlap is the length of the intersection, sometimes expressed as a proportion of the union or of one interval. In geometry, overlap can mean the area of intersection between polygons or other regions, computed using polygon clipping or boolean operations. In image analysis, overlap is frequently evaluated with bounding boxes or masks, using metrics like intersection over union (IoU).

Common metrics include the Jaccard index, defined as the size of the intersection divided by the size of the union, and the Dice coefficient, defined as twice the intersection divided by the sum of the sizes. The overlap coefficient, also known as the Szymkiewicz–Simpson coefficient, is the intersection size divided by the smaller of the two sets. For intervals or continuous domains, overlap can be expressed as the length of the intersection divided by the length of the union, providing a normalized measure.

Applications span data integration, resource scheduling, genomics, ecology, computer vision, and information retrieval. Efficient calculation relies on appropriate data structures—hash sets for exact set operations, sorted lists or two-pointer techniques for intervals, and specialized geometric algorithms for polygons. In high-dimensional or large-scale settings, approximate methods or probabilistic data structures may be used to reduce computation while preserving useful overlap estimates.
