Osoonilünk is a term of Estonian origin that translates to "ozone layer." The ozone layer is a region of Earth's stratosphere that absorbs most of the Sun's ultraviolet (UV) radiation. This layer is primarily composed of ozone (O3), a molecule consisting of three oxygen atoms. The concentration of ozone is highest in the ozone layer, although it is still very low compared to other atmospheric gases.

The formation of the ozone layer is a natural process. UV radiation from the sun splits oxygen molecules (O2) into individual oxygen atoms. These highly reactive atoms then combine with other oxygen molecules to form ozone. Ozone can also be broken down by UV radiation, creating a continuous cycle that maintains the ozone layer.

The ozone layer plays a crucial role in protecting life on Earth. By absorbing harmful UV-B radiation, it prevents it from reaching the planet's surface. Excessive exposure to UV-B radiation can cause skin cancer, cataracts, and damage to plant life and marine ecosystems.

In the late 20th century, scientists discovered that certain human-made chemicals, particularly chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), were depleting the ozone layer. This led to international efforts to ban or phase out the production and use of these substances. The Montreal Protocol, signed in 1987, is a landmark international treaty designed to protect the ozone layer by phasing out the production of numerous substances that are responsible for ozone depletion. Efforts to protect the ozone layer have been largely successful, and the ozone layer is showing signs of recovery.
